Nestled in the Ionian Sea, Corfu, along with its satellite islands of Ereikoussa, Mathraki and Othonoi, is the second largest of the Ionian Islands and was once home to the Greek royal family. The island is situated on the northwestern frontier close to mainland Greece and is a place of great history and wonderfully scenic beauty.

The capital goes by the same name and is home to the Ionian University. Corfu city consists of a labyrinth of narrow and pretty streets, paved with cobblestones. Many are too narrow for cars and other vehicles to pass, making them perfect for exploring on foot. Several lovely Corfu villas are situated both in the city and its surrounding areas, with shops and facilities close by.

For those wishing to enjoy the sea air, close to the Bay of Garitsa is a promenade overlooking the ocean. On the Spianada (or esplanade) the Liston, a colonnade with many cafés and bistros, can be found as well as a plaza and park.

The northeast coast of the island is an ideal spot to spend some time at pretty much any time of year, in a choice of villas in Corfu. The island is a lush and green environment, mainly thanks to its winter rainfall and offers wonderful displays of tropical orchids, eucalyptus and acacias. Summers can be hot and humid, with the heat often relieved by the meltemi wind which refreshes the island, while winters are relatively mild.

Corfu Weather & Climate

Like most Greek Islands, Corfu has a standard climate with warm summers and milder winters. The island starts warming up in May with June - September being the peak summer season.

Due to Corfu being a bit more hilly in the inner region, and a bit further south than other Greek islands it does have more rainfall than other parts of Greece, but the main resorts will tend to be completely dry throughout summer.

Getting To Corfu

Most visitors to Corfu arrive via Corfu International Airport (CFU), or Ioannis Kapodistrias which is its Greek name. It is located half way down the eastern side of the island giving easy access to all parts of Corfu.

Corfu Town is only 4 km away making for super short transfers and taxi journeys, whilst Kavos in the south is about a 1 hour car ride away.

Holidaymakers arriving by boat will usually dock at Corfu Port which is also located close to the centre of Corfu Town.

Corfu Beaches

One thing a Greek Island holiday tends to guarantee is an attractive beach, and Corfu is no different, with well over 50 named beaches to explore. If you're looking for sandy beaches then the west side of the island is where you want to be heading, many on the eastern side are pebble or shingle beaches.

Arguably the most popular one is Paleokastritsa Beach, famed for its sandy beach and surrounded by bars and restaurants, great for water sports though it can get a little crowded in the peak months. Scuba diving and boat hire are available for the more adventurous of you, or simply choose to relax on one of the many available sun loungers.

Kerasia beach in the north is a pebble beach that offers beautiful scenery and stunning views across the clear blue sea, a great day out.
