For a choice of three bona fide taverns the small village of Kato Horio at the head of the Dyktynna Gorge is just a 3km drive, whilst a 6km drive will bring you to the village of Malaxa where there are two taverns boasting a little more sophistication and amazing aerial views over Chania town and Souda Bay.
For basic necessities, the village of Kontopoula (5km) has a small mini-market, but for stocking up the larder there’s a really good supermarket on the outskirts of Souda that you will pass by on your way from Chania airport. It’s also worth noting that every week day a bread van delivers fresh bread to the village around 7pm.
Well off the beaten track as far as tourism goes, the small village of Gerolakos, nestles in the foothills of the White Mountains a mere 13km to the south of Chania, providing a perfect location to enjoy the natural untouched beauty of rural Crete, yet still be within striking distance of Chania and the beautiful beaches of Crete’s north coast.
